OPEN SESSION SATURDAYS:
Sept 12th, 2009 (Every 2nd & 4th Saturday). From 6:00pm-10:00pm

*Due to the high demand of people who wanted to get a spot on the Open Mic during our kick-off event on Aug. 29th, we will be implementing a sign-up sheet for anyone who wants to do a poem, song, etc during the Open Mic portion of the night.

-Open Mic Sign Up: For anyone who wants to do a written piece, poem, song, track, etc. Sign up will be from 6:00PM-7:30PM on a first come, first serve basis and will be limited to a 10 minute set for each performer who signs up. (Open Turntables will be going down during sign-up, and after Open Mic Performances.)

If you are performing to music, beats etc. please bring your instrumentals on a CD, or have them on an MP3 player.

-Open Mic Performances: will proceed at 7:30PM and go no later than 9:30PM

-The "Freestyle Cipher": will proceed from 9:30 until the end of the night. No sign ups.

We are also welcoming artists of all types to come out, as always. Feel free to bring your paint, canvas, easels, sketchbooks, photos, etc..

ALWAYS FREE: FOR THE PEOPLE

(*Open Session Saturdays is HIGHLY INSPIRED by the "Day One" open mic & turntable weekly, held at Java Source/Rockin' Java in San Francisco, CA. Circa 2000-2002. Respect due.)

We, as the artistic inhabitants of this city, have for years suffered from a lack of any communal space through which to freely expose our artistic endeavors to our neighbors. Artists and musicians from Vallejo are forced to continually play shows outside the city limits, which is not negative in and of itself, but which does nothing to help develop any type of hometown support. Artists of all types suffer because of this lack of hometown space, and it does nothing but stifle creativity, and make greater the rising sentiment that, "there's nothing to do in Vallejo."

This is why the Open Session Saturdays exists - to not only provide space for artists to showcase their creations, but to also provide a positive environment for people of all backgrounds to come and immerse themselves in the culture of their city - the creations of their fellow neighbors, which they may have never been exposed to before.

What is Open Session Saturdays?:

Founded on the tradition of Hip Hop open mics & ciphers/turntable Q&A sessions, Open Sessions Saturdays was created to provide a “Jam Session” environment for artists of all types (Visual/Audio/Hip Hop/Jazz/Rock/etc.). Whatever your artistic passion is, we invite you to this space to express yourself, network, build, or just kick back and enjoy the positive vibes as it all goes down.

Open Session Saturdays will happen every 2nd & 4th Saturday, with the kick off event taking place August 29th 2009. The kick off event will feature special performance sets by local Bay Area talent. We also plan to have a “Featured Artist” night once a month.

OPEN TURNTABLES- DJs: Wanna showcase a set, free mix, or have a scratch session? Bring your needles and records. Turntables will be open throughout the night. Resident DJ Rod Roc will be holding down the sound system.

OPEN MIC- We are inviting all spoken word artist, singers, emcees, etc to participate. The mic will be open throughout the event as well for any written pieces to be expressed. We will then hold the open mic “cipher” during the later half of the night for emcees to freestyle while the DJs keep the beats moving, in Hip Hop tradition. Resident emcee LMNtal will be making sure the mic gets passed, and they cipher keeps flowing.

OPEN SPACE- Artists, Photographers, Producers, Dancers, Writers, Activists, etc. This is a place where you can come together to network, do work, collaborate, organize and vibe off of the environment, music, and each others energy. Bring your notebooks/rhymebooks/sketchbooks/canvas/cameras/instruments/beat machines/samplers/etc.

OPEN TO EVERYONE- We invite everyone to come out and enjoy the talent that Vallejo, the surrounding cities, and the entire Bay Area has to offer. Weather you participate in the festivities, or just want a place to chill, Session Saturdays is always Open.
